Scope and Content Arbroath Harbour, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was for many years the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. Its harbour was remodelled in 1841-6 and 1871-7. This shows the harbour office, at the north-east corner of the harbour. This was apparently part of the 1841-6 works, and the low-pitched roof and open eaves are typical of the transport architecture of the period. The 1841-6 works involved the construction of a massive new breakwater pier to the south of the existing harbour, forming a large new tidal basin. In 1871-7 the old tidal basin was enlarged and converted into a wet dock. This office survived the 1871-7 remodelling, and was still in use in 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
