Scope and Content Factory, East Grimsby and North Grimsby, Arbroath, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was for many years the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. This shows the building from the north-east, with East Grimsby on the left, and North Grimsby on the right. The rows of windows on the first and second floors, blocked up to suit its later use as a grain store, imply that it was originally a hand-loom mill, probably built early to mid-19th century. This works was occupied in 1970 by J & J Smith, grain merchants. It is shown on the 1859 Ordnance Survey 1:2500 plan of Arbroath as simply 'Factory', probably implying centralised hand-loom weaving of linen. The building has been demolished.
