Scope and Content Inch Mill (St Rollox Works), Lindsay Street, Arbroath, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was for many years the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. This shows the frontage of the St Rollox Works to Lindsay Street from the south-east, in the centre, with part of Bank Mill (Sailcloth) to the right. Behind the two-storeyed front block is a range of single-storeyed weaving sheds. This works is described on the 1921 Ordnance Survey 1:2500 plan of Arbroath as 'St Rollox Works', with no indication of what was its use at that time. Its physical characteristics, however make it almost certain that it was built for linen manufacture of some kind. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
