Scope and Content Pool Mill (Nursery Works), West John Street, Arbroath, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was for many years the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. This shows the east end of the oldest large flax-spinning mill in Arbroath. It was hemmed in by lower buildings, as seen here, possibly deliberately, to deter possible machine-breaking. Note the large window of the engine house at the right-hand side of the building, a typical flax-spinning mill feature. In 1970 the works was apparently disused. It had many multi-paned, cast-iron window frames, a style of construction characteristic of the 1820s and 1830s in Glasgow. The works has been demolished since this photograph was taken.
