Scope and Content Douglas Fraser Works (Westburn Foundry), Orchard Street, Arbroath, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was for many years the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. This shows one of the oldest parts of this large engineering works, which is split into three sections by a road and by the main railway line form Arbroath to Aberdeen. This part was probably originally a mid 19th century flax-spinning mill, (part of Inch Mills) but had been converted into a machine shop. The Westburn Foundry was established by Douglas Fraser & Sons, and originally made machinery for the flax and jute trades. By 1970 it had become the property of Giddings and Lewis Fraser Ltd, and was making machine tools. Most of the works closed in 1993. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
