Scope and Content Eglinton Engine Works, Cook Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1855 by A & W Smith & Co, general engineers. The original works ranges along Cook Street, and was extended along West Street in stages between then and 1875. There are later additions to the east and south. This shows the works from the north-west, with the c1855 block on the left. The four storey block to the right may have been contemporary with the corner block. The two tall single-storey ranges at the end were added in 1866-68 and in 1874-75 to make fabricated malleable-iron work, such as piers. A & W Smith Ltd for many years specialised in building sugar machinery, both in their own name, and also from the 1960s under the Mirrlees name. They also made Ross steam and air hammers and Loudon planing machines. The firm was latterly part of the Tate & Lyle group, and closed in the early 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
