Scope and Content Warehouses, Chapel Lane, Leith, Edinburgh This warehouse was near the north end of Maritime Street, in an area densely built up with 'traditional' warehouses in the early and mid-19th century. This was the largest, and was probably built as a grain store, perhaps after the repeal of the Corn Laws in the 1840s. This shows the building from the south east, with Chapel Lane on the left, and Bernard Street in the distance on the right. The style of the masonry suggests a mid-19th century date. This warehouse was disused and for sale in 1970, and was subsequently demolished. 'Traditional' warehouses were obsolete by the late 1960s, as large motor vehicles and mechanical handling made storage on trading estates more attractive. Bulk handling of grain had already made old grain stores redundant. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
