Scope and Content Warehouse, Timber Bush, Leith, Edinburgh Timber Bush is a corruption of timber bourse, the timber market of Leith, where imported timber was bought and sold. It became a warehouse quarter in the early and mid 19th century, as trade through Leith expanded, with a network of narrow streets. This shows the remains of a warehouse on the east side of Timber Bush after partial dismantling. The construction is unusual, with timber pillars and beams, and cast iron pieces at the heads of the columns to tie the structure together. This warehouse may well have been built for the storage of grain, possibly after the repeal of the Corn Laws. Edinburgh, with a very restricted hinterland, had to rely on the coastwise or foreign trade ingrain to satisfy its demand for grain for its growing human and horse population. This warehouse has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
