Scope and Content Warehouse, Nos 36-38 Timber Bush, Leith, Edinburgh Timber Bush is a corruption of timber bourse, the timber market of Leith, where imported timber was bought and sold. It became a warehouse quarter in the early and mid 19th century, as trade through Leith expanded, with a network of narrow streets. This shows the west side of one of the oldest warehouses in the area, with its hoist doors giving access to the attic as well as to the main floors. The rubble construction suggests that it was built in the early-mid 19th century. This warehouse was probably built for the storage of grain, possibly after the repeal of the Corn Laws. Edinburgh, with a very restricted hinterland, had to rely on the coastwise or foreign trade in grain to satisfy its demand for grain for its growing human and horse population. This warehouse has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
