Scope and Content Victoria Swing Bridge, Leith Docks (Leith Harbour), Edinburgh Leith's first harbour was the mouth of the Water of Leith, improved by the construction of piers to protect the entrance, and by the quaying of the sides of the river-mouth. Enclosed docks were built from 1800, and in 1871-4 the first swing bridge on this site was built. It was replaced in about 1896 by this bridge. This shows the bridge from the south. It is hydraulically-operated, and carries both road and rail traffic. The fence on the right marks the boundary of the dock estate. The buildings on the left are part of Menzies and Co Ltd's ship-repair yard. The dock estate has been extensively remodelled since 1970, and a new spine road constructed to give access to development sites, This crosses the Water of Leith to the north of Victoria Bridge on a fixed low-level bridge, ending navigation upriver. Victoria Bridge has been retained, inoperable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
