Scope and Content East Old Dock, Leith Docks (Leith Harbour), Edinburgh Leith's first harbour was the mouth of the Water of Leith, improved by the construction of piers to protect the entrance, and by the quaying of the sides of the river-mouth. The first enclosed dock, the East Old Dock, was built in 1800-06, off the west side of the rivermouth harbour. This shows the west side of the rivermouth harbour from the Shore, its east quay. The ship is moored at a quay immediately east of the entrance lock to the East Old Dock, which can be seen to the right of the vessel. On the right is part of a ship-repair yard. The East and West Old Docks were filled in during the late 1960s. The transit sheds to the left in this view, and the buildings of the ship-repair yard were demolished in the early 1970s, and the wooden quays on the left replaced in concrete. Houses have since been built on both quays. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
