Scope and Content Warehouses, Tower Street, Leith, Edinburgh These were two of the more modern warehouses in Leith, built in the late 19th or early 20th century. No 21 was in 1937 the property of Davidson's Road Transport, Aberdeen and Edinburgh Carriers, and was probably built as their base. No 15 belonged to Peter Saddler and Co, stevedores and contractors. This shows the frontage of these two buildings, with part of an older warehouse on the left. No 21 is in the centre, with its four vehicular entrances, and no 15 is on the right. The latter may have been designed as a depot for horse-hauled vehicles, with stabling on the upper floors. The long-distance road carrier was a feature of Scotland from the days of horse haulage, but the trade received a great impetus from the development of motor lorries. Recognised transit depots were a feature of the business. The trade continues in different forms. These buildings have now gone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
