Scope and Content Bonded Warehouse, Nos 4-4A Mitchell Street, Leith, Edinburgh Mitchell Street runs east from Constitution Street, and contained some of Leith's largest warehouses, built in connection with the port. This is one of the largest and was built in the late 19th century as a bonded warehouse. In 1927 it was known as No 1 Customs Bond. This shows the frontage of the warehouse from the south-west, showing the front bay of four. The building is constructed of snecked sandstone rubble, a typically late 19th-century style of construction. From the mid-1960s the warehousing of spirits in urban areas was phased out, following a disastrous fire in a whisky warehouse in Glasgow. This move was speeded up by advances in the mechanical handling of casks in racked warehouses. This warehouse has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
