Scope and Content Harbour, Kirkcaldy, Fife There has been a harbour at this point since medieval times, and it was the focal point for the growth of Kirkcaldy. A new east pier was built in about 1600, and was enlarged several times, notably in 1843 by James Leslie. The harbour was much extended into its present form in 1906-08 by Rendel and Robertson. This shows a coaster at the east quay of the inner harbour, a wet dock created as part of the 1906-8 improvements, seen through a transit shed on the west quay, probably built as part of the 1906-08 scheme. The coaster had brought grain into the harbour for Robert Hutchison and Co's maltings and mills. The harbour improvements of 1906-08 created an inner wet dock and an outer basin, The east pier was extended as a breakwater and a south breakwater pier was constructed. The new works were executed in mass concrete. The impetus for the improvements came from the linoleum industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
