Scope and Content Pollokshields East Station, Glasgow The Cathcart District Railway was promoted to serve the growing suburban areas to the south of Glasgow. The first section was opened in 1886, with a terminus at Cathcart, and it was extended to form a 'circle' (in fact a loop) in 1894. This station is on the 1886 section. This shows the station from the north east, with part of the Coplawhill Tramway Works on the left. The through stations on the line all had island platforms, which economised on staff, and most had the wooden platform building with all-round glazed awning seen here. The platform building seen here was the first on the line to go, being destroyed by fire in the early 1970s. It was replaced by a small modern building at the bottom of the stairs in this view. The part of the tramway works in this view has also been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
