Scope and Content Library, Wanlockhead, Dumfries & Galloway Veins of lead ore in the Wanlockhead area were developed from the 17th century with encouragement from the Queensberry Estate. Together with Leadhills, next door in Lanarkshire, Wanlockhead had the richest deposits of lead ore in Scotland. Both Leadhills and Wanlockhead had early lending libraries, as lead miners worked short shifts. This view shows the Wanlockhead Library, founded in 1756 and still in use. Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland, more than 1400 feet above sea level, and is often in the clouds. Lead mining ended in the 1920s, but was revived in the 1950s, when the New Glencrieff mine was reopened. A fall in world lead prices led to its closure after a brief period.
