Scope and Content Upper level of still house from west, Ardmore Distillery, Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire Ardmore Distillery was founded in 1898 by William Teacher's son, Adam, to produce whisky for blending. The whisky produced here continues to be used in Teacher's Highland Cream, and is also released in some single malt bottlings. The distillery was modernised in the 1950s and 1970s, but still retains its traditional coal-fired stills. This shows the upper level of the still house, above the fireboxes which heat the huge copper stills (centre). Coal is supplied to the fires by the hoppers (far left). The stills heat wash from the fermentation process creating vapour which passes over the lyne arm into the condensers (far right). The resulting spirit then passes through a spirit safe where the purest, middle section of the run is diverted into the warehouse vat. At this stage the whisky is clear and requires maturation for at least three years in wooden casks. These have previously contained either sherry or bourbon, and impart further colour and flavour to the product. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
