Scope and Content Former maltings, malt kiln, mash house, still house and railway siding, Ardmore Distillery, Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire Ardmore Distillery was founded in 1898 by William Teacher's son, Adam, to produce whisky for blending. The whisky produced here continues to be used in Teacher's Highland Cream, and is also released in some single malt bottling. The distillery was modernised in the 1950s and 1970s, but still retains its traditional coal-fired stills. This shows, from left to right, the two-storeyed former maltings where barley was germinated, the malt kiln with its pagoda roof which ventilated the peat fire drying the malt, the mash house where the malt and water are fermented with yeast, and the still house where the wash is distilled into spirit. The railway siding also visible in this photograph was used to handle deliveries of coal and barley from the nearby mainline, and to despatch casks of finished whisky for blending. Many distilleries had their own small tank engines for shunting wagons of supplies around the site and assembling trains for the mainline. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
