Scope and Content Cottage at north-west corner of courtyard, Crackaig Farm, Highland, from south-east Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is on the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. The coastal strip was the first area to be 'improved' following the implementation of a programme of agricultural investment in the 1790s, which replaced the old system of subsistence farming and the way of life associated with it. This shows a stone-built cottage at the corner of the courtyard, typical of the buildings designed and constructed for farm workers on improved land. Previous houses in the area were made of low stone walls, topped with a mixture of mud and peat and shared by both people and animals. In order to encourage improvement, control methods of farming and induce tenants to construct buildings and enclosures, landlords used the terms of the leases they granted to tenant farmers. Landlords might be expected to meet a percentage of building costs by setting them against rent due from the tenant. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
