Scope and Content Detail of south gable of straw barn, Crackaig Farm, Highland, from south Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is on the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. A policy of 'improvement' was begun in the 1790s when a growing commercialisation of farming and the application of science revolutionised Scottish agriculture to create single tenant farms such as this. This shows one gable of the straw barn. One of its arched openings was built up during renovations in 1871. At the same time, a window was fixed into the lower half of the opening above with louvred boards in the upper half to give ventilation in the hay loft (since blocked up). The renovations of 1871 cost a total of £348. The policy of improvement begun in the 1790s completely altered the agricultural landscape of the estates. Despite the significant costs involved, the programme was sustained throughout the 19th century. Between 1862 and 1876 alone, a total of £176,965 was spent on new buildings across the estate.
