Scope and Content Steading, Crackaig Farm, Highland, from south-east Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is on the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. The area was the first to be 'improved' by the Dukes during the late 18th century when a growing commercialisation and application of science revolutionised Scottish agriculture and created farms of this type. This shows one side of the steading with its arched main entrance. It was originally built in 1829 as part of a sustained programme of improvements on the arable coastal land. The E- and L-shaped steading included a barn with water-powered threshing machine, cattle courts, byres, stables and a straw house. Before improvement, Scottish agriculture relied on subsistence farming. Groups of people lived in communities called 'fermtouns'. Improvement created larger, commercially viable units worked by a farmer and his labourers. It forced others to leave the fermtoun and a way of life they had always known.
