Scope and Content Farmhouse, Crackaig, Highland, from south-west Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is on the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. After Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland, married George, Lord Stafford, in 1785, a major programme of improvements was begun, abandoning the old methods of subsistence farming and the way of life associated with it. This shows the farmhouse at Crackaig with its crowstepped gables and dormer windows. It is typical of the type of house associated with large, arable farms run by a single tenant farmer whose status in the local community reflected his position as a 'gentlemen of property'. The investment required to meet the cost of improvements on the Sutherland estates was provided partly by the farmer and partly by the landlord. The farmer who had the lease of Crackaig between 1809 and 1824, had two-thirds of the cost of his new corn loft and threshing machine set against his rent in 1824.
