Scope and Content Early 20th-century view of the north side of the Choir, Dunblane Cathedral, Dunblane, Stirling, towards the nave Dunblane Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral begun c.1238, was added to and altered a number of times before suffering damage in the 16th century during the Reformation. In 1889-93 the building was completely restored by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, and the choir refurnished in 1912-14 by the architect, Sir Robert Lorimer. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1914. Lorimer lined the choir with stalls in two rows, those at the back with richly carved Gothic-style canopies by the wood carvers, William & Alexander Clow. The organ case, also by Lorimer, has a decorative open front of pierced and carved traceried woodwork that partially conceals the organ pipes. The space for the organist is placed out of sight at a console facing the choir. It is interesting to compare this photograph of the north wall of the choir with an earlier one taken by Lemere of the north wall in 1895 after the cathedral was restored by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. Here the original elaborate Victorian organ case has been replaced by Lorimer's conception of a medieval organ case which was simply a decorated box with an open front or, as the Scottish Reformers called it, 'a kist (chest) of whistles'.
