Scope and Content Nave, Dunblane Cathedral, Dunblane, Stirling, looking east towards the choir Dunblane Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral begun c.1238, was built on the site of an earlier 11th-century church. The whole building was completely restored by the renowned Scottish architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, between 1889 and 1893. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The tall, narrow, eight-bayed nave, possibly the finest part of the cathedral, dates from c.1240. Its principal attraction is its simple proportions, the clustered shafts of the pillars supporting the arches of the side aisles, and the graceful clerestory windows. The vaulted timber roof, part of Anderson's restoration, is similar to that of Glasgow Cathedral's choir. After the stormy days of the Reformation, the nave relapsed slowly into ruin, a process hurried by the fall of the original timber roof. The choir, however, was kept in good repair as a place of worship, and was converted for use as the parish church. In 1889, the whole church was rescued by Rowand Anderson, and restored to its former glory. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
