Scope and Content Dunblane Cathedral, Dunblane, Stirling, from the north-east Dunblane Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral built on high ground above the River Allan, was begun c.1238 by Bishop Clement, and incorporates a tower from an earlier Romanesque church on the site. The nave was left unroofed after the Reformation, and the building completely restored by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, between 1889 and 1893. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the exterior in 1895. The church has a tall, narrow nave (right), roofed during Anderson's restoration, and a tall, aisleless, late 13th-century choir (left) with a magnificent traceried window in its east gable. The lower storey with a lean-to roof (foreground) was the first part to be built, and is a private chapel (Lady Chapel) probably originally used as a Chapter House. On the south side (background) is the late 11th-century square tower, topped by a 15th-century parapet and short spire. As part of the reorganisation of the church in the early 13th century, Bishop Clement moved to Dunblane and oversaw the construction of a new cathedral. In the 16th century, during the stormy days of the Reformation, the cathedral suffered much damage and fell into decay. However, the choir retained its roof and was converted for use as the parish church. Rowand Anderson's late 19th-century reconstruction restored the cathedral to its former glory.
