Scope and Content Dwelling and byre range, The Mount, Fife The Mount Farm and Steading lie 4km north-west of Cupar, on the south-east side of the Mount Hill overlooking the Howe of Fife. Farm buildings date back to 1828 with the majority of work dating to 1830-1 and designed by Thomas Brown, an architect from Uphall. More work was done in the 1850s to extend and improve the steading. This is the dwelling and byre range at the steading from the south-east. To the right is the dwelling house with its rubble masonry walls of field stones and whin stone (any of several hard, igneous or basaltic rocks), with basic sandstone margins, some with tooling marks. The roof is of red pantiles with a tile ridge cover, fixed to battens with lathes between, and set on A-framed roof couples. Next to the nearest door is a piece of red sandstone set into the wall with four rows of raised letters carved on it. The letters (S, D, L, D and G) are thought to commemorate the eminent 16th-century writer, Sir David Lindsay who lived at The Mount for a time. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
