Scope and Content Internal viaduct from top of the Fife cantilever, Forth Bridge, Edinburgh and Fife The Forth Bridge was built between 1883 and 1890 to designs by engineers Sir John Fowler (1817-98) and Sir Benjamin Baker (1840-1907) with Sir William Arrol (1839-1913) and Joseph Phillips as contractors. This massive steel railway viaduct features three double cantilevers connected by girders with a total span of 2.5 km. This view from the top of the 110m-high cantilever shows a goods train on the internal viaduct below. To the left can be seen the five steel tubes emerging from the 'skewback' on its circular granite pier. In between the tubes are girders strengthened with cross-bracings. Working at great heights about the water caused many hundreds of accidents and 57 deaths during the bridge's construction. Nets were placed below some working areas and boats patrolled the sea below the cantilevers, rescuing at least eight men, and recovering over 8,000 workmen's hats and other articles of clothing and equipment.
