Scope and Content St Vincent Street Lane from east, Heron House, No 255 St Vincent Street, Glasgow Heron House, built 1967-71 by architects Derek Stephenson & Partners, is a complex of offices, car park and shops occupying a sloping site enclosing St Vincent Street Lane. This megastructure, which includes a 13-storeyed tower block, is built around the famous St Vincent Street Free Church which was built 1857-9 to designs by architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. This shows the partly-covered tunnel over St Vincent street Lane between two of the Modern blocks. St Vincent Street Lane allows access to the car park within the complex (right) and pedestrians are sheltered by the canopy lit by glass bricks two storeys above. The walls on the left have tiled and timber-boarded cladding. The idea of bringing cars into the centre of the Heron House complex of shops and offices was also seen in Cumbernauld Town Centre built 1963-72. This complex has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
