Description Vertical aerial photograph showing St Kilda.

Date 6/1995

Collection Photoair Limited: Aerial Imagery (Scotland)

Catalogue Number SC 722685

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Aerial view of St Kilda, Western Isles This aerial view is of the village area, with part of Village Bay. To the far right is the church and school. The other buildings in the foreground are part of the Ministry of Defence camp which dates to 1966. Part of the harbour, which dates to 1901, is also visible at the far right of the photograph. In the 1830s the village was laid out with the line of houses in the middle and strips of land stretching behind and in front of each dwelling. The traditional 'black houses' were replaced in the 1860s by the rectangular-shaped houses. Behind the village is the 'head dyke' which also dates to the 1830s. It was built to keep the livestock off the arable land. The little circular buildings dotted all over the landscape are known as 'cleitean' or 'cleits' and were used for the storage of food, hay and clothes. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
