Scope and Content Lock-keeper's Cottage, Lock 27, Forth & Clyde Canal, Temple, Glasgow This pair of locks was built between 1787 and 1790 as part of the section of the Forth & Clyde Canal from Maryhill to Bowling designed by Robert Whitworth to complete sea-to-sea navigation. The locks are widely spaced, and had a lock-keeper's cottage between them. This shows the lock-keeper's cottage from the north-west. This was a typical Forth & Clyde Canal cottage of the type normally provided for lock and bridge keepers. Until 1932 there was a bascule bridge over the chamber of the lower lock. These locks have been refurbished as part of the Millennium Link Project, which resulted in the reopening to sea-to-sea navigation of the Forth & Clyde Canal in 2001. The lock-keeper's cottage has been incorporated, much altered, in a pub restaurant. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
