Scope and Content Dawsholm Chemical Works (Dawsholm Gas Works), Dalsholm Road, Glasgow Dawsholm Gas Works was built for Glasgow Corporation Gas Department in 1871-72, and subsequently extended and rebuilt on several occasions. In common with the other Corporation gas works, it had its own chemical works to treat the tar and ammoniacal liquor produced in the works. This shows the rear of the street frontage of the works from the north east, after closure and partial dismantling. The buildings with the arched corrugated-iron roofs may well have been part of the 1870s works. Their function is not known. By 1934 Dawsholm's chemical works, and those at Tradeston and Dalmarnock, were distilling tar to produce road tar and sending the lighter tar oils, and concentrated ammoniacal liquor, to Provan Gas Works for working up into refined products. Dawsholm closed in 1964, and with it the chemical works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
