Scope and Content Reed and Heddle Factory, Nos 105-111 John Street, Glasgow This factory was built in 1866-67 for James Neilson & Son, reed makers, and by 1872 proprietors of the Patent Heddle Co. The works had frontages to John Street, Love Loan and Margaret Street, the first sandstone ashlar-clad and the other two finished in red and white brick, as was fashionable at the time. This shows the building from the north west, looking along Love Loan, with Margaret Street going off to the right. Note the unique chimney with its lotus top. This building was, after a period as a warehouse for the North British Rubber Co Ltd, occupied by the University of Strathclyde. It was demolished in the 1970s to form a garden in front of the University Staff Club and Sports Hall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
