Scope and Content Warehouse, Nos 31-35 Virginia Street, Aberdeen This is a fine example of a late 19th or early 20th century warehouse, probably designed for whisky blending. It seems probable that it was built as a bonded warehouse by James Catto & Co, whisky merchants, during the whisky-blending boom of the 1880s and 90s. This shows the building from the south east. The prominent chimneys give it a distinctive appearance, but the most interesting feature is the pyramid roof, with its louvred ventilator. This was probably covered a whisky-blending hall. Though it could not compare with Leith or Glasgow as a centre of whisky blending, Aberdeen's proximity to the Speyside and other malt whisky distilleries and its role as a seaport resulted in the establishment of several blending firms there. These included Chivas Brothers, in foreign ownership, which is still in business. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
