Scope and Content Nave and East Transept, Coats Memorial Baptist Church, High Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire, from the Chancel Coats Memorial Baptist Church, a magnificent cruciform (cross-shaped) Gothic Revival church with a central tower which dominates the Paisley skyline, was designed by the architect, Hippolyte Jean Blanc, and built 1885-94 in memory of Thomas Coats, the Paisley threadmaker and philanthropist. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The nave (right) and transept (left) have arched timber roofs, and are divided from the narrow side aisles by pointed arches supported on clustered piers with carved capitals. Within the east transept these arches are filled with elaborate timber fretted screens. The bronze lectern on the steps leading to the chancel has a reading desk in the shape of an eagle. Hippolyte Jean Blanc (1845-1917) won the competition for the design of Coats Memorial Baptist Church in 1885, and it proved to be his most important ecclesiastical work. Blanc, born and educated in Edinburgh, served his architectural apprenticeship with David Rhind before setting up on his own in 1881. He designed many well-known churches in Edinburgh, including St Cuthbert's Parish Church on Lothian Road, and Christ Church [Episcopal), Morningside. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
