Scope and Content Guardbridge (old), Fife This bridge was built to carry the main route through Fife to St Andrews over the river Eden in the early 15th century, and extensively repaired in 1601, 1678-86, 1786, and 1802. The later repair probably involved easing the gradients at the ends to suit coach traffic. This view shows the bridge from the north. It has five large and one small segmental spans, and massive piers with triangular cutwaters, three of which support pedestrian refuges. The general character of the structure suggests a 17th, rather than a 15th century date. On the left is the replacement bridge. The bridge was bypassed to the east by a closed-spandrel reinforced-concrete bridge in 1935-37, designed by F A MacDonald and Partners, but has been retained as a footbridge.
