Scope and Content Paper Mill, Main Street, Guardbridge, Fife These mills were converted in 1872 from the Seggie Distillery, founded in 1810 by William Haig. It remained in ownership of the Haig family until it closed in 1860, and was from 1845 a grain whisky distillery. The conversion was undertaken by the Guard Bridge White Pine Co Ltd. This shows the street frontage of the mills from the north west. The buildings beside the vehicles appear to date from the period when the distillery was in operation. By 1969 the complex was making high-grade papers. The 1872 conversion was undertaken to make newsprint using mechanical wood pulp, as newspapers were becoming popular. The site was a good one both for a distillery and for a paper mill, as there is a good supply of fresh water, and the effluent can be piped out to sea. The mills are still in operation.
