Scope and Content Old Bridge, Inner Bridge, Guardbridge, Fife This bridge was built to link the main route through Fife to St Andrews with the route through Leuchars to the Tay ferries at Tayport and Newport. It crosses the Motray Water which is tidal at this point, though fordable at low tide. This shows the bridge from the south west. It has three segmental spans, and massive piers with triangular cutwaters, but the gentleness of the gradients of its carriageway indicate that it was designed for coach traffic, and that it was probably built in the early 18th century. The bridge was repaired in 1804, and was bypassed in the mid 20th century, and has been retained as a footbridge. Railings have been added to the parapets as a safety measure.
