Scope and Content Footbridge & Level Crossing, Old Station House, Station, Station Road, Carnoustie, Angus The first station on this site was opened in 1838 by the Dundee & Arbroath Railway, a 5 ft 6 in gauge line. This railway was regauged to standard gauge in 1847. From 1880 to 1948 the line was jointly run as the Dundee & Arbroath Joint Railway, who rebuilt the station probably in the 1880s. This shows the footbridge from the south-west, with the south-bound platform building to the right. This footbridge was provided for ordinary pedestrians, as well as passengers, to use when the level crossing was closed to road traffic. Carnoustie was an outpost of the Dundee flax industry, but in the later 19th century developed as a seaside resort, specialising in golf, The rebuilt station was on a scale reflecting the heavy summer traffic it handled. The platform buildings were replaced in about 1985 by much more modest structures. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
