Scope and Content Garrion Mills, North Lanarkshire These mills were among the very few corn mills powered by water from the river Clyde, which has for most of its length too slight a fall to suit water-mill construction. This one drew its water from a long slanting weir, and was on a narrow site on the north side of the gorge cut by the river. This shows the mills from the north-west. The oldest part of the mill projects to the right from the massive retaining wall. Part of the weir can be seen to the right. The taller buildings seen here are corrugated-asbestos-clad granaries, of mid-20th century construction. This mill was disused in 1969. Its dramatic site led to proposals to convert it into an hotel, but poor access from the east side of the narrow Garrion Bridge prevented that from happening. Most of the buildings seen here have been developed since 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
