Scope and Content Botanic Gardens Station, No 1057 Great Western Road, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway, promoted by the Caledonian Railway to link its lines in Lanarkshire with the west and north of Glasgow, and, via the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway, with the shipyards on the north bank of the Clyde, and with the Vale of Leven. This shows one of the two onion domes on the roof of the surface building of the station, and one of the chimney stacks. The tower was tile-hung. The station platforms were in a cutting below the surface building, and were reached by covered stairs. The station was designed by James Miller, architect. The Glasgow Central Railway suffered badly by competition from Glasgow Corporation's electrified tramway system, opened in 1901, and this station closed in 1939. The surface building was used commercially until 1970, when it was destroyed by fire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
