Scope and Content Ferguslie Thread Works (Mills), Maxwellton Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire This large complex was founded in 1826 by James Coats, cotton-thread manufacturer, and subsequently greatly enlarged. Cotton thread manufacture received a great impetus from the mass-production of sewing machines from the 1860s. Ferguslie became one of the largest thread mills in the World. This shows the south end of the mills, with no 8 mill to the left. This was built in 1890, probably to designs by Woodhouse and Morley, architects, Bradford. To the left is the L-plan block formed by Nos 1-5 mills, built from 1826-1857, the oldest mills in the complex. No 8 mill was built for doubling cotton yarn spun in no 1 spinning mill of 1887. Doubling is the process of twisting together several strands of yarn to give a strong and stable yarn. Ferguslie was run down during the 1970s, and Nos 1-5 mills were demolished in the mid 1970s, and no 8 in 1979-80. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
