Scope and Content Station Hotel, Nos 91-115 Hope Street, Glasgow This very large building was built in 1877 to serve as the station hotel for the Caledonian Railway's new Central Station, on the other side of Hope Street. While it was being built the rival Glasgow & South Western Railway built their new hotel above St Enoch Station, and the Caledonian followed suit. This shows the building from the south-east. It is on a U-plan, with frontages to Waterloo Street (left) and Bothwell Street. Internally it has a layout of central spine corridors with rooms on either side, reflecting its designed function. It has since its construction been used as shops and offices. The hotel was to be known as the Blythswoodholm Hotel and was designed by Peddie and Kinnear. The Caledonian Railway, when it decided to copy the Glasgow and South Western Railway, was able to convert the railway offices above their Central Station into an hotel, with comparatively little alteration.
