Scope and Content Warehouse, Nos 54-60 Broomielaw, Glasgow This large and imposing warehouse was built in 1878 for J & P Hutchison, shipping agents for a large number of foreign ports. They presumably used this building for collecting goods for shipment until suitable vessels were available, and for storing incoming goods until they were collected. This shows the building from the south-west. It is typical in design and scale of a number of warehouses built in Glasgow in the 1870s and 80s, and is faced with cream sandstone. The situation of the building was ideal for the class of business being transacted. In 1969, as the advertisements on the frontage suggest, the building was being used as a spirit store and offices by several firms of spirit distillers and merchants. It is still standing, having escaped the extensive demolitions which have taken place in this part of Glasgow since 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
