Scope and Content Garie Works (Mill), Kirriemuir, Angus This mill was founded in 1868 by the Wilkie family to weave jute fabric for sacking and bagging, presumably using yarn spun in Dundee, which was the centre of the jute trade. The mill was originally steam-powered, and there were still three steam engines in it in 1969. This shows a three-throw belt-driven hydraulic pump serving a hydraulic packing press in the finishing block. The belt drive can be seen on the right, and the edge of the packing press on the left. The press had a hydraulic ram so the it could squeeze air out of goods being packed to minimise their bulk. The rolls of jute seen here were typical of the output of the mill at that time. The jute was finished by passing it through calenders or mangles to close up the texture of the cloth, to make it suitable for sacks to carry powdery material. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
