Scope and Content Curved covered walkway to south approach ramp from the north-east, Cumbernauld Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows one of the access ramps and walkways designed to allow easy pedestrian access to the Town Centre complex away from traffic. The white-painted concrete wall sweeps up and over the path forming a canopy and possible shelter from the weather. An important and innovative part of the design of the Town Centre was that pedestrians and cars should be kept separate. To achieve this, ramps were installed to protect people on foot from the busy roads around the building. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
