Scope and Content Clyde Square main concourse, Phase I, Cumbernauld Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows the main shopping area within the Town Centre where a variety of shops are housed in kiosks. Seating areas, clad in decorative tiles to match the walls can be seen (left) and a light fitting composed of various lengths of shiny metal pipe hangs down from the ceiling. The upper walls carry decorative panels installed in a 1980s scheme of redecoration. The kiosks within the shopping area were originally intended to be temporary, flexible features, easily adaptable to new uses within the developing centre. In practice, the structures were not used in this way, and remained permanent features. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
