Scope and Content Penthouse access corridor within Phase I of the Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows the long corridor near the top of the structure known as Phase I. The distinctive oval windows run the length of the building, and are shown after the renovations of the 1980s. The floor is covered in tiles of two colours laid to create an abstract pattern. The pierced panel to the right helps to light the staircase. Although originally intended to be used as penthouse flats, the rooms near the top of the Town Centre proved to be unsuitable for residential use, and were later converted to offices. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
