Scope and Content South car park and parking way from the south, Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows the parking way, a road which allows access to the two car park floors below the Town Centre. The concrete ceiling with its supporting columns has been cast with a grid pattern to resemble coffering (deep panels in a ceiling). There are many ways to reach the Town Centre: visitors can drive into the building and park in the two levels of car park, arrive by bus from the central carriageways, or walk into the centre on the covered or open walkways. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
