Scope and Content Relief decoration on the south-east wall of first floor in south car park, Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows the car park wall below the Town Centre complex. The concrete wall has been cast with swirling patterns reminiscent of the ancient cup-and-ring marks found carved on stones in the landscape. The concrete ceiling is cast with a grid design giving the effect of coffering (deep panels in a ceiling). When the complex was constructed many different patterns and textures were moulded into the concrete to create contrasting surfaces to be appreciated in their own right. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
