Scope and Content South approach ramp from the south, Cumbernauld Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows the ramp with its sheltering wall which leads pedestrians into the Town Centre. Seen from the garden area, the raised concrete walkway forms a sculptural curving shape against the plants and buildings beyond. The red cube on its stalk-like base is a water tank. An important and innovative part of the design of the Town Centre was that pedestrians and cars should be kept separate. To achieve this, ramps were installed to protect people on foot from the busy roads around the building. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
